"Beat It" was a worldwide commercial and critical success; becoming one of the best-selling singles of all time. At the 1984 Grammy Awards, the song earned Jackson two of eight awards-Record of the Year and Best Rock Vocal Performance. The track won the Billboard Music Award for favorite dance/disco 12" LP in 1983. The lyrics are about defeat and courage and the music video was Jackson's first treatment of black youth and the streets. The music video also helped establish Jackson as an international pop icon and became famous for its mass coreography.
